Our Abbie has spent the last two weeks as the Assistant Director for The Garage's Big Summer Production of Sleeping Beauty. She's been working as part of the creative team which consisted of a professional director, choreographer, musical director, producer, costume designer and stage manager.
All 49 students aged between 7 and 17 were involved in the performance which lasted 1 hour 20 minutes.
We caught up with Abbie after the fourth and final performance:
"What an incredible project this has been! The Garage's Summer Production is such a fantastic opportunity for young people to work with creative practitioners in a professional environment. They've joined in vocal warm-ups every day led by Sam Sommerfeld, the most wonderfully vibrant MD I have ever worked with! They've experienced a taste of the 90's through fun dance warm-ups with the lively choreographer Scooby Atkins! And the brilliantly talented director Tom Fox and I put the students through their paces with some good old (and new!) drama exercises to wake up their minds!
I still cannot believe how much we have achieved as a team - that's both the young people and the staff! The increase in confidence in so many of the young people has been exceptional. They created so many lovely characters, movement sequences and Sam even got them all singing in tune for each song! (Definitely no mean feat!)
One of the ways I like to see how far the students have developed is by joining their parents in the foyer just after the final show. If you measure their experience by the proud tears of parents and carers, or the tears of "I don't want to leave the friends I've made" and pleads of "Promise you'll come back next year!", I can safely say this has been an experience they will remember for a very long time."
